We are able to perform a wide variety of surgical procedures on site, from routine desexings to complicated orthopaedic and soft tissues surgeries. Our surgery is all done in our dedicated sterile surgery room.
We also have a separate wet table area in our preparation room that we use for messy non sterile surgeries such as abscesses.
Anaesthetics-Giving a general anaesthetic comes with certain risks and at Patterson River we like to ensure our pets undergo surgical procedures with minimal risks. Anaesthetics are constantly monitored by our experienced nurses. Our anaesthetic monitoring includes an apalert (to monitor breathing), a pulse oximetre (to monitor heart rate and blood oxygen levels), blood pressure monitoring as well as clinical monitoring by our nurse (constant checking of heart with stethoscope, mucous membrane colour and capillary refill time). If your pet is older or we feel is at a greater risk then our staff will recommend that your pet is on intravenous fluids during the anaesthetic. This helps maintain blood pressure and generally assists with a smoother recovery form the anaesthetic. We may even suggest pre-anaesthetic blood tests to ensure there are no underlying internal problems that will compromise the anaesthetic.
Pain relief-We believe pain relief is an important aid to good recovery from surgery. Surgical patients are given pain relief prior to the procedure as part of their sedative and then most patients are sent home with pain relief.
Surgeries include the following:-desexings, abscesses, wound repair (lacerations, dog fights), gastro-intestinal surgery (biopsy for diagnosis, foreign body obstruction), fracture repair (via pinning or plating), cruciate repair (Greg uses various methods depending on each individual case), luxating patellar repair (slipping knee cap), tumour removal (benign and neoplastic), eye surgery (eyelid tumour removal, grid keratotomy for indolent ulcers), in fact unless is is very complicated we will do most things on site. We will always offer referral if we feel that a specialist is needed.
